Dress of the Day - June 4, 2011

Dress of the Day: Madame Grès evening gown (1954).
Why I love it: This simple yet richly draped Grecian gown is absolutely timeless
Favorite Madame Grès anecdote: Along with fellow couturiers Lelong and Balenciaga, she defended French couture against Nazi attempts to put an end to it during their occupation of Paris. Grès flouted the Nazi's restrictions on fabric and had her business closed down. When she reopened before the end of the war, she presented a collection in blue, white, and red, the colors of the French flag.
