Dress of the Day - June 19, 2011

Dress of the Day: Worth, Walking Dress (ca. 1885). I featured a 1920s Worth piece earlier, but can't neglect works from Charles Frederick Worth's own lifetime, during which he set the tone for mid- and high-Victorian style. Tailored Victorian women's clothing, like this walking dress, evolved into the suits we wear today. There is glass detail on this silk ensemble, which also features a very large bustle. I love the eye-catching stripes, endowing the look with a sporty feel despite the lace and womanly silhouette.
It comes from the Brooklyn Museum Collection at the Met.
